DONNA WOOLFOLK CROSS: After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Donna Woolfolk Cross worked for a Madison Avenue advertising firm, where she first learned how a clever wordsmith can use language to manipulate, convince, and deceive. This experience led to her books “Speaking Of Words”, “Word Abuse”, and “Mediaspeak.”Making the leap to historical fiction, her favorite form of leisure reading, she wrote “Pope Joan”, a novel that took over seven years of research and writing.
Pope Joan was a selection of the Literary Guild and Doubleday Book Clubs. It is an international bestseller, translated into 36 different languages. In Germany, Pope Joan was #1 on the bestseller list for over three years. It is still#1 on the list of long-term German bestsellers. There has even been a special bottling of wine in its honor:"Die Papstin" ("She-Pope") wine, whose label features the book cover for Pope Joan!
The movie version of Pope Joan, co-starring John Goodman (“Raising Arizona”, “O, Brother, Where art Thou?” & many others), and David Wenham (“Lord of the Rings” trilogy), had its world premiere in Berlin in 2009, and will be screened at Moondance 2010.
