Our civilization is so interconnected and influenced by the media that a worldwide fear of oceans submerging the earth and sparking the end of the world is spread by any news item related to the date of 21st December 2012. This date has somehow become part of our collective imagination, and is causing anxiety among many people, as a result of the media's interpretation of this so-called Mayan prophecy. However, this film puts to rest the potential for a prophecy of worldwide destruction on that date, and acknowledges that the Mayans presented that date as a hopeful new beginning, not a destructive end. |

MEHERJAAN, feature film, Directed by: Rubaiyat Hossain (Bangladesh). Meherjaan is a film about loving the Other. Meherjaan gives away with the unitary masculine narrative in order to usher in emotional multiplicity of feminine emotion and sensibility. This film critiques certain pitfalls of nationalism that create conditions to justify war, killing and violence. Finally, Meherjaan attempts to offer an aesthetic solution to war and violence by taking refuge in love and spiritual submission. Finally, at the bottom of the box of stories, like lurking hope, there is the secret story of Meher’s own past of falling in love with a man from the enemy side. The stigma of loving an enemy has been heavy on her. However, when Sarah, the war-child says, “your story gives me hope!”—Meher finally feels forgiven. Together, Sarah and Meher gain the strength, courage and hope to go forward. The haunting traditional music of Bangladesh creates its own story, and this film score won at Moondance 2011. |
